Ammonia (fertilizer and fuel): uses in research

Also: NH3, Haber-Bosch process, nitrogen fertilizer, ammonia economy

Ammonia is a simple gas made of nitrogen and hydrogen. Industrial ammonia, first made possible by Fritz Haber's 1908 patent, is the basis of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, and researchers now also study it as a carbon-free fuel and a way to store energy.

Roadmap to an ammonia economy

MacFarlane and colleagues set out how ammonia could become a sustainable fuel for heavy transport, power generation and energy storage, moving from today's Haber-Bosch production toward making ammonia directly from nitrogen with electricity, and noted that research missteps have clouded that path.

A century of ammonia synthesis

Marking 100 years since Fritz Haber filed his 1908 patent on making ammonia from its elements, work that later earned him the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Erisman and colleagues described a world transformed by, and highly dependent on, Haber-Bosch nitrogen, tracing human population alongside nitrogen use through the twentieth century.
